Amtrak's Long-Distance Train Performance

Full Year 2016

For the year 2016, the Bull Sheet has calculated that 40 percent of Amtrak's named long-distance trains arrived at their final destination on time or earlier.

The average arrival of all long-distance trains in the survey period was 45 minutes late.

The average arrival of the 60 percent of trains that were behind schedule was one hour and 14 minutes late.

The train with the best on-time percentage was the Empire Builder (with 70 percent), and the train with the worst on-time percentage was the Palmetto (with 17 percent). Still, from a statistical standpoint, the Empire Builder had the latest arrival of trains that arrived at their final destination behind schedule (one hour and 45 minutes late). Meanwhile, the Vermonter's average arrival of its trains that were behind schedule (32 minutes late) bested all other trains within the survey during the year, yet the Vermonter only had a 21 percent on-time arrival percentage.

A train is considered late whenever it arrives at its final destination behind schedule, even if only by a minute. Sufficient padding is incorporated into long-distance train schedules to eliminate the need for grace allowances in showing a train arriving on time when it is actually nominally late.

Trains arriving ahead of schedule are shown 'on time,' with no extra credit given to offset other arrivals that are late. Trains that are canceled, truncated or presented by Amtrak as being 'service disrupted' are typically excluded from the data.

This survey was compiled by the Bull Sheet's statistical department comprehending actual performance as reported for each affected train on Amtrak's website.
