Union Station, Bangor, Maine

By Beryl Frank

The clock tower at the train station at Bangor had an octagonal belfry. It had a round arch arcade with a pointed tower top and the clock was placed below the belfry.

The tower rose 119 feet from the base of the finial and the total height was 130 feet. The view from the top overlooked most of the city of Bangor.

In 1961, the clock tower was dismantled. The clock has been preserved by an unknown preservationist who removed it from the tower before the demolition of the station. The station and its clock tower were replaced by a strip mall.

It is sad to see a train station demolished. It is even sadder to see a tall clock tower demolished. But the passenger trains were empty, if they came at all, and the citizens of Bangor wanted to use the space profitably.

So demolition took place, and most people scarcely recall Bangor's train station with its wonderful clock tower.
