Union Station, St. Louis, Missouri

By Beryl Frank

This early postcard shows the ladies still wearing long skirts and hats. Horses pulled carriages and even little girls (lower left) wore large bonnets. The clock tower reached to the sky. C-1900.

Two hundred thirty feet into the air is very high, but that was the height of the clock tower shown here. The station's principal facade including the clock tower was clad in rough-hewn light-colored limestone. The rough - originally gray - Spanish tile roof was replaced with red tile in 1955. The restoration of the train station was completed in 1985 and the clock tower still tells the time in 2006.

Note the architect's use of points reaching to the sky. The clock tower reaches for the sky as well. [Post card photo circa-1908]
