Union Stations Across the U.S.

By Beryl Frank

Canaan,Connecticut

Take a long look at the grand Victorian wooden structure shown here. This was the Union Depot of Canaan, Connecticut. It was built in 1872 by the Housatonic and Connecticut Western railroads at the junction in North Canaan.

The Canaan Union Depot was built on a corner with the sides meeting on that corner.

The Union Station at Canaan has Victorian wooden carpentry and was designed with exterior wood and walls of board and batten siding.

In 1971, passenger service was discontinued to Canaan and freight would only remain until 1974. A devastating fire burned out both wings of the station. Today, the Connecticut Railroad Historical Association has worked with others to preserve this impressive old station.

The Canaan Union Depot, built in 1872, is today on the National Register of Historic Places.
