B&O RAILROAD MUSEUM TO MANAGE ELLICOTT CITY STATION

[B&O Railroad Museum, 12-05]

It has been with great anticipation that we are able to make a wonderful announcement..

Over the course of the last year, the Museum has been in negotiations with the Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks and County Executive James Robey to assume the management of the historic Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Station in Ellicott City, Md.

The museum's proposal was accepted by the Howard County Council on Dec.5, 2005.

Located a short 10-mile drive west of the museum's main campus in downtown Baltimore, this historic structure is the oldest railroad station in America. Constructed of local granite in 1830 as the B&O's first terminus, this building is one of America's most historic and significant railroad structures.

Located on the scenic Patapsco River at the intersection of the National Road, this restored building along with its 1884 freight house present marvelous opportunities for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum to extend its education programs and exhibits in a unique way.

This building was saved from destruction by a group of citizens who formed Historic Ellicott City Inc. in 1973. They subsequently raised the funding necessary to restore and protect this treasure and have operated it for many years as a museum. The surrounding historic town of Ellicott City additionally offers our visitors unique shopping venues and wonderful restaurants, all nestled in the scenic main street hillside town.

Great things are in store..

The museum will temporarily close the station beginning February 2006 to refurbish its rooms and install exhibits. We will present its Grand Reopening Celebration March 10-12, 2006.
