Amtrak Long-Distance Trains

Performance for week ending March 13, 2016

Thirty-eight percent of Amtrak's long-distance trains arrived at their final destination on time or earlier in the week ending March 13, 2016, according to the Bull Sheet's statistical department. To be shown arriving on time, the train needs to arrive at or before the time it is actually due, and there is no grace provision for trains arriving minimally late with compensation for distance traveled. Long-distance trains typically have considerable padding in their schedule, particularly between the last intermediate stop and final destination. To add a grace allowance for late arrival (usually about 30 minutes, according to Amtrak), on top of schedule padding (often up to an hour or more) distorts a true analysis. The data presented by the Bull Sheet are more realistic.
