'Bike Through History' on the
Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail
(Northern Central Railroad Trail)
_ _ _ _ _
The 2009 Bike Through History program encompassed eight scheduled bicycle rides - each from a different location along the trail - plus a preseason 'Get Reacquainted' ride, a picnic, and a Moonlight Ride.
Special attention this year was given to two anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the final trip of the famed 'Parkton Local,' and the 20th anniversary of the reopening of the Monkton station as a trail museum and visitor center. (For further information on these anniversaries, CLICK HERE.)
The 'Get Reacquainted' ride was May 27. Three of the scheduled rides - June 3, 10 and 17 respectively - were cancelled due to weather. The average participation of the remaining five rides was 16.6 per event.
The picnic was staged at Monkton station the evening of July 28, attended by 28 people. It was estimated that there were 12 non-staff participants from Bike Through History, and the others in attendance were association volunteers and one DNR staff person. The affair was a great success with bountiful food, fun and good fellowship enjoyed by all.
Finally, on August 5, there was a Moonlight bike ride from Monkton, attended by 15 participants.
The 2009 Bike Through History program was arranged and staffed by members of the NCR/Hereford Volunteers Association.
