'Bike Through History'

on the

Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail

 

BIKE THROUGH HISTORY FOR 2021: NCR-Hereford Volunteers Association's Bike Through History program resumed on the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail in northern Baltimore County, Md., after canceling its program last year due to the pandemic. This year's schedule included eight Wednesday evening rides, each from a different location...

June 2 from Paper Mill: Hi everyone. We had 17 riders at our first Bike Through History ride of 2021. Richard Anderson presented us with some interesting tidbits about cicadas during his 'creature feature,' and David Jahnke provided us with some information about the history of railroads in our country, as well as the American system. Regarding COVID restrictions: A mask is not required during the ride, but is recommended while we are stopped or if you are unable to stand at least six feet away from others nearby. -- Chris Walsh

June 9 from Bentley Springs: We had 17 riders at our second Bike Through History. Richard Anderson gave a presentation on some items that Civil War soldiers carried with them in battle, and David Jahnke provided us with some information about the history of the Bentley Springs area of the Northern Central. -- Chris Walsh

June 16 from Monkton: We had 19 riders at our third Bike Through History ride of 2021. The Gunpowder Garden Club gave a presentation and tour of the gardens and other work they have been doing around Monkton station. -- Larry Reese

June 23 from White Hall: We had 24 riders at our fourth Bike Through History. Our next ride will start at Sparks and the distance will be around 10 miles. It will be hot, so please make sure to stay hydrated. -- Chris Walsh

June 30 from Sparks: We had 16 riders at our fifth Bike Through History. Our July 7 ride will start at Freeland parking lot. We will ride north to the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line to discuss Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and then proceed to New Freedom to get a sweet treat at Bonkey's Ice Cream. The total ride distance will be around six miles. -- Chris Walsh

July 7 from Freeland: There were 13 riders on this our sixth Bike Through History. We began at Freeland and biked north to the state line to discuss Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Then we rode into New Freedom, Pa., to enjoy ice cream at Bonkey's. -- Chris Walsh

July 14 from Parkton: There were 18 riders at our seventh Bike Through History. We began at Parkton, rode south to the Snake Pit for introductions, then rode north to Bee Tree Road where we discussed the development of the town that never came to be, as well as some reported sightings of a Sasquatch. Our July 21 ride will start at Phoenix. -- Chris Walsh

July 21 from Phoenix... We had 24 riders on our final Bike Through History of the season. We started at Phoenix, rode south to the bridge at MP-1 for introductions, rode north back to Phoenix for a creature feature on aquatic mammals, then continued north, stopping just south of MP-6 to discuss the evolution of local turnpikes, train systems and highways. -- Chris Walsh

Total attendance for the season was 148, an average of 18.5 per ride.

 

'Bike Through History' is conducted by volunteer members of the NCR/Hereford Volunteers Association.. The Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail (formerly the Northern Central Railroad Trail) is located in northern Baltimore County, Maryland, and extends for nearly 20 miles from Ashland to the Pennsylvania state line.. Its route is the former right-of-way of the Northern Central branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad.. Passenger train station stops along the route included Ashland, Phoenix, Sparks, Glencoe, Corbett, Monkton, Pleasant Valley, Blue Mount, White Hall, Graystone, Parkton, Walker, Bentley Springs and Freeland.. The trail is maintained as a portion of the Gunpowder Falls State Park.. Northward into Pennsylvania, the trail is known as the York County Heritage Rail Trail, maintained by York County..
